Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie is a fantasy comedy that brings the iconic fashion doll to life. Released in 2023 alongside Oppenheimer in the historic "Barbenheimer" weekend, it became the highest-grossing film of the year.
The Detailed Plot: Existential Crisis in Barbieland
The story begins in Barbieland, a colorful matriarchal utopia where self-confident Barbies hold all presidential, judicial, and professional positions, while the Kens spend their days lounging at the beach.
Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) starts experiencing flat feet, cellulite, and sudden thoughts of death. Following the advice of Weird Barbie, she travels to the Real World via Venice Beach to find the child playing with her. Ken (Ryan Gosling) slips into her car to join her.
In Los Angeles, Barbie locates her owner, a mother named Gloria, while Ken discovers patriarchy and decides to introduce it to Barbieland. By the time Barbie returns, Ken has brainwashed all the Barbies and turned the utopia into "Kendom." Barbie, Gloria, and her daughter Sasha must work together to deprogram the Barbies and restore balance.
